In the 1880s the Don River in Toronto was channelized such that it turns a perfect right angle at its mouth, stabilizing the former flood plane and eventually setting the stage for the development of the Port of Toronto. Over time, various additional overlays of infrastructure began to echo this imposed right angle: rail lines, power lines, surface roads, and the Don Valley Parkway and Gardiner Expressway would eventually intersect at a right angle above this site. In 1992, in an area adjacent to the Don River and the Keating Channel, I mapped out a right angled footpath measuring 120×90’ by walking back and forth between the hours of 9am and 5pm, for one month.
